How heystranger works

heystranger connects adults for spontaneous text conversations and voice calls. This guide explains how to start, what to expect from a random match, and how to protect your privacy while you talk.

Start with text or voice

Confirm that you are 18 or older, then choose Start Text to type or Start Voice to speak. You do not need to create an account or public profile. For voice, your browser will ask for microphone access; you can deny or revoke that permission in your browser settings.

Voice conversations are not recorded by the heystranger application. WebRTC audio may travel directly between browsers or through a network relay, depending on the connection. Do not treat a voice call as confidential: the person you are speaking with can hear and remember what you say.

Matching is random, not a booking

Language and interest choices are optional. An interest can help narrow matches at first, but matching may broaden over time so people are not left waiting indefinitely. A selected language or topic does not guarantee that your match speaks that language or wants to discuss that topic. Say what you are hoping to talk about and check that it works for both of you.

If the conversation is not a fit, use Next to leave and look for another match. You do not have to explain why or share contact details to continue a conversation elsewhere.

Conversation starters that give both people room to answer

A specific, open question is easier to answer than “hey” alone. Try one of these, then follow up on something your match says:

  • What is something small that made your week better?
  • What music, food, or film have you enjoyed lately?
  • What place would you like to visit, and why?
  • What is a skill you would like to learn?
  • For language practice: would you prefer a relaxed chat or gentle corrections?

In a language-learning conversation, agree on a simple format first: take turns asking questions, ask for clarification when needed, and decide together whether corrections are welcome. A stranger may not be a teacher or a native speaker, so treat the conversation as practice rather than formal instruction.

Keep control of your personal information

Do not share your full name, address, workplace, phone number, passwords, financial details, or social media accounts with someone you have just met. Be especially cautious about links, requests for money, or pressure to move to another service. If something feels wrong, end the chat.

Active chats have Block and Report controls. Blocking prevents future matching with that device. A report sends the reason and recent message evidence submitted by your browser; the other participant may also be asked for their copy. The app does not confirm that a report was reviewed or promise a particular outcome. Read the full reporting details before using the service.

What happens to messages?

Ordinary stranger text messages are not written to the application database, but message text is sent to the configured automated moderation provider before delivery. Messages included in a report may be stored as evidence. Messages exchanged with an accepted friend are stored in the service database. The exact providers and important retention limitations are described in the Privacy Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is heystranger for children?

No. It is intended only for people aged 18 and over. The age prompt asks you to confirm your age; it does not verify your identity or age.

Can I choose who I talk to?

No specific person can be selected. You can choose text or voice and optionally set preferences, but matches depend on who is available and are not guaranteed to meet a particular language, topic, or outcome.

Where can I ask a question or raise a concern?

Use Report during an active conversation for an in-chat concern. For other questions, see the Contact page. For the service background, visit About heystranger.
